Report highlights
-
Participant-informed, sustainable design: Nesting Grounds was created in response to participant requests for long-term, non-threatening, and destigmatizing arts programming to support mental health. As one participant shared, “The [Access Alliance] art programs help me and my mental health, but what should I do after it ends?” – Newcomer Well-being Workshop Participant.
-
Welcoming & trust-building space: The program offers a creative and inclusive environment where refugees and immigrants build trust with the agency, feel more comfortable sharing health concerns, and access timely, appropriate care.
-
Led by newcomer community artists: Sessions are facilitated by newcomer artists working within healthcare and settlement contexts, supporting cultural connection, creative expression, and stigma reduction. Participants valued learning from artists with shared lived experiences.
-
Ongoing, flexible support: The weekly, drop-in format is open to newcomers of all ages, providing consistent access to peer support, mental health concepts, and Access Alliance services.
-
Growth & community reach: During the six-month pilot (October 2024–March 2025), the program expanded from a core group to include multiple newcomer artists and participants, with outreach through referrals, clinic waiting-room pop-up workshops, community fairs, and word of mouth.
-
Positive participant impact: Participants described Nesting Grounds as a meaningful space for self-care, connection, and relief: “Stay open for everyone because we share our experiences, like back and forth. In this rush of life, we must find something to enjoy. I know I’m tired, but I need that time when I attend [this program] and I enjoy the time, I feel like it’s a relief.” – Nesting Ground Participant
