Peer research training handbook
The Peer Research Training Handbook is adapted from the Peer Training manual for the project titled “Impact of Family Loss and Separation on Refugee Youth: Implications for Policy and Programs” funded by the Children and Youth Refugee Research Coalition (CYRRC). The handbook was developed to train internationally educated and trained researchers, young and emerging researchers, and community members interested in conducting ethical research with a peer-led community-based research approach.
Special feature: Includes additional trainings including TCPS 2: CORE certificate, Sex and Gender training modules, and more relevant resources.
User outcomes
- Introduce peer researchers to Access Alliance by building understanding of the organization’s mission, infrastructure, and diverse teams, and grounding participants in its commitment to advancing health with dignity for Toronto’s diverse communities.

Explore the importance, scope, and practice of peer research, supporting participants to understand the value and benefits of peer-led research within vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Build understanding of community-based research (CBR) by examining its core principles and practices, and supporting participants to distinguish CBR from other research approaches and understand what is expected of community-based researchers.

Highlight Access Alliance’s role as a community-based research hub, including its leadership and contributions to CBR over time, and how this work supports community capacity building.

Clarify the role of peer researchers in CBR, strengthening participants’ understanding of their responsibilities, ethical considerations, and contributions to conducting meaningful, community-informed research.
