Stepping up toolkit

The Stepping Up Toolkit is a guide for service providers and organizations to deliver expressive arts programming among 2SLGBTQ+ newcomer communities. Grounded in research and developed through community involvement, it provides promising practices for fostering safety and preventing violence. This resource has been designed to create inclusive, creative spaces with the hopes of promoting healing, connection, and empowerment.

Special feature: Appendixes with example feedback surveys, comparative analysis of two expressive art programs, literature review, and sample session plans.

User outcomes

  • Inclusive program design: Develop and deliver expressive arts groups specifically for trans-identified newcomer women of all sexual identities, as well as cisgender newcomer women who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or questioning, ensuring programming is affirming and inclusive.
  • Evaluating program impact: Assess the effectiveness of expressive arts groups by gathering participant feedback and facilitator observations related to well-being, engagement, sense of safety, and connection.
  • Documenting promising practices: Identify, document, and share effective facilitation approaches, use of art materials, and inclusion strategies that emerge from pilot groups to support future program development and replication.
  • Practical guidance for service providers: Provide clear guidance and resources for organizations to implement expressive arts groups that promote violence prevention, safety, empowerment, and resilience.
  • Community-informed approach: Ensure programming is responsive to lived experiences by drawing on literature reviews, focus groups, and interviews with community members and service providers, with attention to cultural relevance and accessibility.
