Art assistant volunteer training

Access Alliance uses the arts to enhance newcomer mental health and wellness through a range of expressive arts programs delivered across settlement and healthcare services using a coordinated, team-based approach. To strengthen this work, the Newcomer Artists Mental Health Training was developed in partnership with MABELLEarts. The training was designed to equip newcomer artists with practical knowledge, tools, and strategies to safely support program participants who may be experiencing mental health challenges, distress, or crisis situations while engaging in arts-based programming.

Training Objectives

  • Foundational Experience in Expressive Arts. Participants have attended at least three expressive arts program sessions to build familiarity with the activities, structure, and arts-based approach.

  • Interest in Arts for Well-being. Participants demonstrate enthusiasm for learning how creative practices support mental health, self-expression, and community connection.

  • Commitment to Inclusive Participant Support. Participants are willing to assist facilitators in creating welcoming, inclusive, and emotionally safe spaces for all participants.

  • Positive Learning Mindset and Curiosity. Participants bring openness, curiosity, and a supportive attitude toward learning new creative methods and engaging with others.

  • Facilitating Art Activities and Group Engagement. Participants support art-making by demonstrating steps, assisting with challenges, nurturing small group discussions, and providing language support when needed.

  • Peer Well-being Support and Program Assistance. Participants share simple mental health and grounding strategies, collaborate with staff and volunteers, and assist with session set-up and clean-up to ensure smooth program delivery.
